CANDELO MARKET
Where There’s a Will, There’s a Way-
What a Small Community Can Achieve
The very first Candelo Market was held in 1982 — and from that day on, it’s continued every first Sunday of the month without fail.
Born from a passionate group of locals with a bold vision, the Market set out to raise enough money to build a 50-metre swimming pool for the village.
Even the idea of constructing a pool of that size in a small country town showed incredible determination. A local committee was formed, and after years of tireless work, the vision became reality.
Construction began in 1993 on land donated by the Kameruka Estate, and by October 5th, 1997, the Candelo-Kameruka Swimming Pool officially opened — without a single cent of government or corporate funding.
A representative from NSW Sport & Recreation even noted it was the only 50-metre pool in NSW to be entirely community-funded — an extraordinary achievement.
Over more than 37 years, Candelo Market has become an essential part of the town’s social fabric — and a cornerstone of the wider Bega Valley Shire. With over $1 million reinvested into local infrastructure projects, the Market has made lasting contributions that continue to benefit the entire region.
The Market thrives- Even in tough economic times.
Regular stallholders often say it’s the most well-organised and joyful market they attend.
It’s not just a place to shop — it’s a monthly celebration of community, creativity, and connection.
At Candelo, you’ll find a rich variety: locally made crafts, second-hand treasures, thriving plants, handmade clothing, and food from all over the world.
The market was even featured in the Sydney Morning Herald’s Good Food Guide — a proud moment for both the organisers and the producers involved.
Since completing its original mission of building the pool (including a solar heating system and a pedestrian bridge), the Market has continued to give back.
Every dollar of profit is reinvested into the community — supporting the Candelo Showgrounds, Cemetery, Public School, Tennis Club, RSL, Landcare, and more.
Some of these groups have received support more than once — a testament to Candelo Market’s ongoing commitment to the people and places that make this town so special.
Candelo Market’s Incredible Impact
Over the decades, Candelo Market has become more than just a charming village event — it’s a community-powered fundraising engine that has poured love, effort, and over a million dollars into local projects that benefit everyone.
Thanks to the stallholders, shoppers, musicians, volunteers and market-goers, here’s just a snapshot of what your support has built:
Big Wins: The iconic Candelo Swimming Pool A solar heating system to extend swimming season;
A safe footbridge over the creek so kids and families can access the pool;
Playtime Perfected: New park benches, playground equipment, and a community BBQ for the little ones and their grown-ups to enjoy;
Grants and Giving Back:
Ongoing donations to vital local groups including:
Candelo Arts Society,
Candelo Landcare
Candelo Fire Brigade
Candelo Showground
Candelo Connect
Candelo Public School
Candelo Tennis Club
And in 2024... The Market gifted the town a little extra sparkle — funding all the Christmas lights and decorations that lit up Candelo’s streets and smiles throughout the season.
